So what is mindfulness? As we go through the day our minds are bombarded by thought after thought. Psychologists estimate the average person to have over 6 000 thoughts in a day. That's a lot of thinking. And depending on who you are a lot of stress.

Enter mindfulness. If you look up mindfulness in the dictionary, we find that it is a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings thoughts and bodily sensations. To put it simply mindfulness is a practice that allows you to be aware of your thought patterns without necessarily reacting. Being mindful can help keep you grounded and bring you back to the present moment when you are faced with stressful situations. It also has been linked to decreased feelings of depression and anxiety, improved memory and even the ability to form more meaningful relationships. So how can you become more mindful? You can start with a simple meditation but we'll get more into that in the next video.
